Mononoke: Phantom in the rain

A review by Shiv

In a theatric continuation of the TV anime , Mononoke Karakasa goes beyond what the anime has to offer, delivering a stunning visual experience along with a compelling narrative following this installment of the medicine seller's journey.

We follow our Medicine seller as his journey leads him to the Ooku. The movie perfectly builds tension with the help of it's incredible score, always keeping that unnerving feeling in you as you watch him find out more about the curse of this place.

The movie's strongest point is for sure the visuals that it puts on screen. Perfectly utilizing the bigger budget this has gotten, the movie's animation reaches heights never seen before, blending buttery smooth animation with colourful paper like art direction inspired by traditional Japanese art. Accompanied by the director's striking direction, every frame in this movie is a visual feast, begging for the viewer's complete attention

Another very strong positive for this film has to be it's incredible voice cast. Every member delivers top notch performances, perfectly matching the high standards that their past performances have set.

The only negatives that I have with it's movie is how it handles it's climax and it's editorial choices, which take away from me being able to fully appreciate the absolutely stunning artwork that the film puts on display

With that being said, the positives of this movie, far outweigh these small criticisms that I have with it, making it in my opinion, easily one of this year's best animated films.

Highly recommend it for everyone.

Overall: 9/10
